Become a Virtual Assistant

I am often contacted by people wanting information about how to become a Virtual Assistant. This prompted me to write this piece to share resources that have contributed to my success. I hope that this information will be a helpful guide to you as well.

Getting to know the industry

The article entitled “Virtual Assistant” by Paul and Sarah Edwards is a good place to begin for an overview. My research (and excitement about the VA industry) began with Christine Durst and Michael Haaren. Today, they provide the most comprehensive informational article on the internet, in my opinion, where they answer the "Top 5 Questions about Virtual Assistance" including self assessments to find out if this industry is really the best option for you.

The only thing I would add to their information is that the possibilities for creating a niche based on your skills and experience are endless. To find out how doing this can absolutely define your practice as well as bring the clients you need to have a full-time income read this article on "Defining Your Niche as a Virtual Assistant", written by Charlon Bobo and posted on one of my favorite online resources, DeskDemon.

Planning for your success

Before starting any business it’s a good idea to work up a business plan and financial planning to be sure that your idea is viable for you and your life situation. There is a multitude of free resources on the internet to get you started. Entrepreneur.com is just one example with its article “Starting a Business: Three Weeks to Startup” that includes a treasure trove of related articles, a detailed business plan example, financial planning advice, a legal checklist and information about setting up your workspace. Visit SCORE for a library of templates that covers all aspects of business and financial planning.

Your marketing plan serves as a guide to the methods you will use to attract clients AND keep them loving your services. Joanna L Krotz wrote “5 Easy Steps to Create a Marketing Plan”. Personally, when I reached a point of overwhelm in creating a marketing plan that I could put into action, I turned to Fabienne Fredrickson’s Inner Circle and eventually purchased her Client Attraction Home Study System. I was so thrilled with the advice that I decided to become an affiliate!

When you’re ready to get started Alice Seba’s 2009 Planning Calendar is perfect for breaking down your business and marketing plans into a manageable plan of action and bonus of bonuses this calendar is FREE!! Get it before she comes to her senses!

Getting Started

To assist new Virtual Assistants with the start-up process, Angela Smith of www.Accu-Assist.com has put together a Master-To-Do-List.

The list is quite detailed, but each task will still need to be broken down into even smaller, more manageable tasks and action items. It is not meant to replace comprehensive start-up kits, guides, books, or manuals.

You can download the free Master To-Do List here: Master To-Do List

After downloading the file you will have access to a FREE Grammar Tips & Tricks archive!

Thank you, Angela!
